Prof. Shimshon Belkin developed bacterial strains serving as biological sensors to detect various toxins in drinking water

One of the most terrifying nightmares of those engaged in defense against terrorism is mass poisoning of drinking water sources.
Prof. Shimshon Belkin in collaboration with additional researchers from the universities of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the Ministry of Health and the IDF Medical Corps is currently developing biological chips - a combination of genetically engineered living cells and electronic components, that will be able to identify the presence of toxins in the water in a reliable, fast and cheap way. This study is financed by the US Department of Defense.
Prof. Shimshon Belkin is convinced that in a year and a half the researchers will have a prototype of this revolutionary apparatus.
